Crime And Disorder Reduction Unit & Strategy

The Paddington Hyde Park Sector Working Group (SWG) is an innovative public-private partnership comprised of the Metropolitan Police, representatives of the local community (residents, business & voluntary associations) multi agencies, other police forces such as British Transport Police and Royal Parks and department representatives from Westminster City Council including their Crime & Disorder Unit. The partnership is a key strategic communications interface between the forces of law and order, the community, and local government. Serving as a high-level forum for stakeholders on issues of law enforcement that are central to the building of a civil society, the Sector Working Group plays an important role in defining objectives, developing action plans, providing intelligence, and assessing feedback. Over the last 10 years the partnership has been an innovative prototype for managing the plethora of challenges present in a multi-ethnic, multi-lingual inner city, functioning effectively in one of the world's great metropolitan centres.

The Group contributes to the City of Westminster Crime and Disorder Reduction Strategy. For more information on Westminster City Council and its Crime Reduction Unit visit http://www.westminster.gov.uk/

The Community Protection Department at WCC is responsible for improving safety, quality of life and standards of health in Westminster. The department exists to improve customer contact and provide a prompt 24/7 response from highly trained people. For more information on the department visit the Westminster Community Protection Dept web page

Bob Currie, Director of Community Protection at Westminster City Council (WCC) with Chair of Paddington Police SWG Lynda King Taylor and Ibrahim El-Nour, Head of Paddington's Arabic Community

Bob Currie, Director of Community Protection at Westminster City Council (WCC) with Chair of Paddington Police SWG Lynda King Taylor and Ibrahim El-Nour, Head of Paddington's Arabic Community, at a recent SWG meeting. Bob has been a long-standing supporter of the Paddington Division Hyde Park SWG. His department is responsible for the WCC Crime & Reduction Unit and a member from that Unit sits on the SWG and works closely with Chair and the Police to collate the Divisional Community Safety Strategy.

Bob said, "Westminster City Council, through its Community Protection department, is committed to reducing crime and disorder. We realise that we can't do this on our own and work closely with the Metropolitan Police and other organisations to achieve this goal. We support and encourage local groups and believe that bodies such as Paddington's Hyde Park sector working group have a positive role to play in fighting crime and disorder."

Sector Inspector Richard Dolman

Sector Inspector Richard Dolman
Paddington Police Division's officer in charge of the Sector Working Group.

Inspector Dolman does not underestimate the significance of the police and community partnerhsip at local service delivery level.

"The importance and influence of a well run and vibrant SWG that is truly representative of the whole Community, - particularly the 'hard to reach' groups - cannot be overstated. It is imperative that we all work together, in partnership, to reduce crime and disorder and the fear of crime and anti-social behaviour. Paddington Police Division's Hyde Park ward is a very strong SWG that has a proven track record of success. Its vitality and leadership provide a powerful conduit to the local Police. In today’s unpredictable world of global terrorism, the SWG provides an increasingly important intelligence value by bringing 'hard to reach' groups on board that are more prepared to work together with the Police to detect and reduce crime. We police by consent - and as such the SWG has a vital role to play if the Police are to gain and maintain the confidence of the whole community.
