The UK Home Secretary

Home Office Logo

The Home Office is the government department responsible for leading the national effort to protect the public from terrorism, crime and anti-social behaviour.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown announced at end of June 2007 the appointment of the country's Home Secretary. On his first full day in office the new Prime Minister chose former chief whip Jacqui Smith to lead the Home Office, making her the UK's first woman Home Secretary. Mrs Smith, is the MP for Redditch, Inkberrow, Feckenham and Cookhill.

The aim of the Home Office is to protect the public and secure our future.

The Home Office leads a national effort to protect the public from terror, crime and anti-social behaviour. They secure our borders and welcome legal migrants and visitors & safeguard identity and citizenship. They help build the security, justice and respect that enable people to prosper in a free and tolerant society.

The Home Office has undergone a "seismic" transformation and "policing is not as it used to be" says Tony McNulty the UK's Minister of State for security, counter-terrorism and policing. He talks with Lynda King Taylor Chair of the Paddington policing partnership about new police collaborations, tackling the nation's fear of crime and winning government's ideological battle. Metropolitan Police Service
Paddington Division Police/Community Sector Working Group for safer neighbourhoods

This website, although currently being upgraded, offers you information and advice on the community policing partnership in central London at local service delivery level within Paddington, North Westminster, known as the Sector Working Group (SWG). The Group is Police Sector based covering Hyde Park Ward + parts of Lancaster Gate, Bayswater, Little Venice, Maida Vale, Westbourne and Harrow Road Wards. This large area comprises a cross-cultural cosmopolitan community in central London - multi diverse with significant numbers of black and minority ethnic people including a vibrant Muslim & Arabic-speaking population. These communities, alongside representatives of businesses, residents, visitors, tourists, agencies, private & public sector partnerships, Council & Councillors plus police, are all represented on our SWG.

The major role of the SWG is to better engage and reassure the diverse community of Paddington in policing, anti-social behaviour, crime & disorder reduction issues. Also to improve the service and performance of policing at local service delivery level, and in this regard works closely with the Ward Panels recently formed in 2007 as well as other agencies and police partnership.

As a recipient of 'best practice' awards in policing partnership and community relations, this SWG website has been produced to spread this experience, principally for our community leaders and multi-agency partners, and also increasingly to share our energy and efforts with others who regularly visit us in London or wish to know more about our policing partnership in practice. These include constabularies in the UK, law enforcement agencies, local and central government agencies, Councils, community protection and other partners such as hospitals, health authorities, non-government organisations, businesses, overseas police forces, police training and other educational establishments.

It is not enough for the police alone to fight crime. Reducing the risk and fear of crime is a task for the police and the community working together. To achieve the aim of police and community of making London the safest major city in the world we need the people who live here, work here and visit here to do their part in making life difficult for criminals.

The Police and our Safer Neighbourhood team across our part of Paddington believe if you are effectively going to deal with, and ultimately reduce crime and disorder problems which have been identified as important, there must be partnership - a joint commitment between Police AND the community they serve. Residents, businesses and visitors to Paddington are fortunate that their representatives from their multi diverse inner city community achieve this through their involvement with their police/community partnership Sector Working Group (SWG).

Home Office objectives

To protect the public, the Home Office focus on seven key objectives:
  1. help people feel safer in their homes and local communities
  2. suppport visible, responsive and accountable policing
  3. protect the public from terrorist attack
  4. cut crime, especially violent, drug and alcohol-related crime
  5. strengthen our borders, fast track asylum decisions, ensure and enforce compliance with our immigration laws, and boost Britain's economy
  6. safeguard people's identity and the privileges of citizenship
  7. work with our partners to build an efficient, effective and proportionate criminal justice system
The Home Secretary said "We have one of the best police services in the world, and we need to continue to strive for an ever better service with local community partnership at its heart. A programme of reform and change that puts the needs and views of communities at its heart is central to the delivery of high quality public services. In community safety terms, this means moving away from a notion of policing simply by consent, to policing carried out with the active co-operation of the public. The public deserves high quality policing, and should have an understanding of what they can expect from the police wherever they live and whoever they are. And in return, the public must recognise their responsibilities in helping to tackle crime - not just their right to live in safer communities."

The Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, also appointed the Rt Hon Jack Straw MP as the new Secretary of State for Justice and Lord Chancellor. Among other roles the Ministry of Justice which came into being May 2007 is responsible for the courts, prisons, probation, criminal law. For more information on the Ministry of Justice visit http://www.justice.gov.uk
